Over the years we’ve paired numerous clients with private investigators. We’ve worked with dozens of attorneys, business owners and individuals in Connecticut to develop the right relationships and ensure they get the results they need.
In that time we’ve developed an understanding of the traits and attributes that a great private investigator exhibits. They’re smart, disciplined and tenacious. They’re communicative, collaborative and mindful of our clients’ privacy.
Essentially, we expect our private investigators to embody the traits that we value so highly in ourselves. Here’s what we look for in ourselves – and our private investigator candidates.
Being able to translate a client’s stated problem into an actionable case is a key part of what we do. Clients often need guidance on defining, outlining and approaching a problem – and it’s not unusual for the goal posts to move. We need a private investigator who can do what it takes to get results. That might mean middle-of-the-night surveillance, digging through records or conducting interviews.
Our work isn’t routine. We’re often on the road or out of the office for long periods. We deal with a variety of people and a range of hugely differing situations. Our deadlines are tight and our work is challenging. That means we look for private investigators who take the initiative to do what needs to be done – when it needs to be done.
We work in a high-stakes industry. Our clients rely on us to gather, vet and follow through with information that can have a profound impact on their lives. That’s not something we take lightly. Any private investigator we hire has to be consistent in their ability to deliver – because our clients expect no less.
Integrity, sincerity and commitment are the hallmarks of trustworthiness, and they underpin our every interaction. We deal with sensitive information during important or transitional stages in our clients’ lives, and we treat it with care and confidentiality. We hold our clients’ reputations – and our own – in high regard, and we expect nothing less from a private investigator.
High-pressure situations and tight deadlines are part and parcel of what we do. Our industry presents unique challenges in that our clients frequently require solutions with very little lead time. Out-of-hours phone calls and urgent emails are the norm – and a prompt response is part of our promise to our clients.
There’s no 9-5 in our industry. Clients don’t hire us based on the clock. They hire us based on our ability to meet the requirements of the case. Our availability correlates with our clients’ satisfaction, so we need a private investigator who’s committed to being there until the case is closed. That can mean long nights, early mornings and tight deadlines.
Technology is informing more and more of our work. A digital footprint can provide a huge amount of information that can make or break a case. And with technology always on the move, staying ahead of the game is essential. We don’t expect a private investigator to be a digital native – but we do need them to be able to adapt.
Our work doesn’t end with the investigations. A large part of what we do is client communication. Whether it’s a telephone call, an in-person meeting or a detailed report, we expect a private investigator to communicate our efforts and their outcomes clearly, directly and accurately.
While we love to work with retired law enforcement, we think that the best experience is gained on the job. We encourage applicants to bring their own life experience with them – so that we can train them up to shape them into the high quality team member we need.
Do you exhibit the above traits?
